Jujutsu Kaisen 0 trailer introduces new heroes for animated series prequel

The prequel animated film Jujutsu Kaisen 0 has its first trailer. The images show the level of animation fans can expect from the animated series spin-off, which delves into the history of the universe in more ways than one.

For the film, we follow Yuta, haunted by the ghost of his Rika, who died six years ago. Now both cursed, he is encouraged to enroll in the Tokyo Metropolitan Curse Technical School by the sorcerer Jujutsu Saturu Goro. This all takes place sometime before Yuji Itadori becomes the regular protagonist, however, it is based on a story that predates Yuji.

Creator Gege Akutami created this tale first and then incorporated it into Jujutsu Kaisen once the anime started to pick up steam. You can feel this difference in the premise – Yuta is not as reckless as Yuji, and the angle of the cursed girlfriend is slightly darker and more romantic than eating cursed fingers and so on. Nonetheless, it does help the animated film to become more event-like and give it its own piece of the myth to explore.

MAPPA, which manages animation for Attack on Titan, Zombie Land Saga, and more, produces. Check out the trailer below:

There is no exit window on when the English-speaking territories will get a subtitled or dubbed version of the film. That said, fans in the UK, US and beyond can probably expect news relatively soon, as Evangelion and My Hero Academia both have had successful releases to the world this year.

Jujutsu Kaisen 0 is slated to open in Japan on December 24, 2021. We’ll keep you posted when the rest of the world can take a look.
