The best anime movies and TV shows to watch if you’re just starting out

Getting into anime can seem daunting, but there’s something for everyone if you know where to look.

For too long, fans have held onto anime – being overprotective, snobbish, and making it hard for newbies to find their bearings when first getting into the genre.

The truth is, there’s something for everyone with anime, but it can be hard to know where to start if you haven’t watched it in a while. Grilled television was still broadcasting. With a mix of classics and fun picks, here’s what to try first if you want to get into anime.

Fullmetal Alchemist

All good stories have a quest. Fullmetal Alchemist centers on the inseparable Elric brothers in a steampunky world who attempt to obtain the mystical Philosopher’s Stone and learn the forbidden secrets of their chosen science. Full Metal gets a bit existential (a common thing in anime) with questions about life, death, faith, corruption, genocide, the soul, and what it means to be human.

There are actually two distinct FA TV shows: the original, which strayed from the original manga when its airdate caught up with the comics, and had to invent an ending like in game of thrones. Then there is the most esteemed Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood which came out six years later and stays true to the intended ending.

The latter is longer, goes deeper narratively, and left fans much happier in the final episode than its predecessor. That being said, Fullmetal Alchemist is still very engaging – so if you’re looking for something shorter, start there, but if you have the ability too, watch both.

Personally, I love my dark, distorted, and psychologically damaging anime, but you might want to start your journey with an easy watch.

Aggretsuko was created by Sanrio (the people behind Hello Kitty) and explores the stress of Japan’s intense office culture through a cute 20-year-old anthropomorph named Retsuko. On the surface, she’s a polite and tough employee, but whenever her stress builds up, she lets it escape through aggressive heavy metal karaoke.

Aggretsuko is a relaxing watch – a great background show for when you don’t want to think. Although the characters are all animals, Retsuko’s real-world issues are endearing and relatable.

Sometimes you just want to see an adorable worker bee navigate test drives, love triangles, and pushy bosses. Severe anime fans might turn up their noses and turn to other otherworldly intellectual canons, but if you’re looking for something relaxed, give Aggretsuko since.

Neon Genesis Evangelion

Get ready to buckle up, this is the one to throw yourself into the deep end. Neon Genesis Evangelion goes from zero to 100 very quickly – one minute that’s all ‘what is it Transformer-look at things’, and suddenly you have a headache trying to follow the plot, the philosophical questions and the ancient traditions.

One thing you’ll notice throughout the anime is an ongoing struggle with post-apocalyptic destruction and the mecha robot genre – both exemplified simultaneously by Neon Genesis.

The original ending is a bit abstract, so much so that it’s good to miss the final episode. Instead, go full-length The End of Evangelionwhich picks up directly from the penultimate episode, and is a more heartbreaking and fulfilling ending. Neon Genesis is definitely a bit more advanced, but it’s an absolute must-have and a great reference to pull out at parties. the opening theme song slap too.

Death threat

Death threat made the rounds on TikTok last year, introducing millions to popular anime and providing a good entry into the world of anime.

It’s basically about a righteous, smart, bored teenager who gets his hands on a special notebook that will kill (within the margins of some very specific rules) anyone whose name is written in it. What begins as a way to serve justice in a cruel world turns into a cat-and-mouse chase between main character Light Yagami and the special police trying to arrest him – not knowing the culprit is right. under their noses all the time.

Death threat is dark, frivolous, and a good starting point to get used to a longer series. Whatever you do, don’t look at it. 2017 Live Action Remake which nearly flopped at the box office and drove a lot of people crazy. Or do! Form your own opinion! Live your best life!
